A teacher has a row of 5 desks in her classroom. How many ways can she arrange 5 students in those d

5P5 = answer = 120

Please your question involves making the ORDER of arranging the students important, you must use permutations to solve your question (and NOT combinations). Thus, we can use nPr, where n is the total number of "places" the students can go and r is the number of students being arranged at once, in this case, 5.

You may also use combinatorics to solve this question. Since there are 5 desks, you can show this by
__5__ , __4__ , __3__ , __2__ , __1__
(any one of the 5 people can be placed in the first chair, and it decreases by 1 person each time until there's only 1 student left to place in the last desk)
Multiplying these values together, you get 120, as above.

[Answer: see above]
5x4x3x2x1 = 120
5! or five factorial.

5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120. Therefore 120 variations.
